Based on AQA English Literature Paper 1
Using current chart music to demonstrate Shakespeare's use of language. Includes example answers and modelling, including how to improve their answers.
The Eminem song contains a religious semantic field similar to that in Romeo and Juliet which links perfectly. The lesson begins with current chart music using figurative language, before moving on to look at how Eminem's song featuring Ed Sheeran is comparable to a Shakespearean text in that it features a plethora of language features, symbolism, themes etc. If using this as a single lesson, then use the next task as a starter which is where students guess if they are lyrics to a song or from Shakespeare, which leads into the analysis of Romeo and Juliet first kiss scene.
Copy of lyrics included and edited to emit any expletives.
The video included (clip the image on the slide to open YouTube video) is an edited version with expletives removed.
UPDATE: Also included is a copy of the Romeo and Juliet extract from Act I Scene V.
