Instruct children that their task for the next few lessons will be to investigate the role of women in Ancient Greece. Remind them that historical evidence is an extremely uncertain thing. Evidence found always needs to be questioned before accepting as fact. Tell them that they are going to produce a short project on the role of women, but they must use 3 different types of evidence: books, internet and artefact of their choice. Make a digitial camera available to those that want to photograph physical evidence. These can then be annotated. Draw attention to SC.
Explain that the children are going to act as though they are a group of Roman spies, scouting out a force of enemy Greek soldiers. You need to bring back information for your Legion.
Have the A3 laminate of the Greek Hoplite stuck somewhere hidden (cupboard, hallway). Give each group a large piece of sugar paper. Explain that one person from each table will have a chance to spy on the Hoplite for 10 seconds, no more or they’ll be seen.
They must then come back to their table and begin to draw the Hoplite from memory, labelling anything they can recognise. Give them 60 seconds to add their detail. Then repeat until everyone has had a go. Repeat until a sufficient level of detail has been added.
Share the drawings. Discuss the detail. Use BBC Big Picture – ‘What Ancient Greek fighters so powerful?’ Read through first page, compare with Roman soldier
