This a slide show with a template for an individual or group exercise for Year 5 or 6 about animals adapting to their environment. The slide show is a PowerPoint with information about the purpose of each slide and in some cases narration that you can use. Starting with understanding that living things are different from non-living things the presentation is to get the class to learn through a participatory activity how different adaptations are used by animals to thrive in their natural environment. This is considered in terms of challenges and opportunities present in the environment that the animal is adapted to. A worked example on vultures is provided as a guide for a research and communication task about one of four animals and how they face a challenge or use an opportunity to thrive in their environment. The exercise is is included in the slide show but could be printed as hard copy. It was originally sized for A3. The exercise has a lot of flexibility in that any animal or plant can be the topic of the exercise just by replacing the title and image. Note there is discussion and images of carrion, raw and spoiled meat which could be distressing to some students. Also there is mention of vomitting.
