Anselm Kiefer in quotes - the artist on his painting & sculpture art and life in Germany - free resource for students, pupils, art-lovers and teachers in German art history

.
Kiefer studied art with German artist Joseph Beuys as his art teacher during the 1970’s in Düsseldorf. Kiefer makes his paintings mainly from straw, clay, lead, oil paint and shellac - among others. They are mainly representational paintings in large sizes. The French poet Celan inspired Kiefer - also did the spiritual concepts of the Jewish Kabbala. Kiefer’s art is frequently referring to Nazi-terror in Germany, the Holocaust and other historical roots of German history.

In his quotes Kiefer describes himself as an artist with a calling - a necessity to stay in this world by creating his art. In his own words of c. 2005: ‘I thought - when I was a child - the only method to be ‘not’ in the world… … is to be an artist. I feel me outside, yes.’

  • ’This time during the Second World War is part of my history, part of my memory, but it is the latest part of my memory, so the memories of each human being goes much more back, it goes to the dinosaurs, even later (Kiefer means: earlier)… … I think we even remember geological times. So this (the Second World War) is one little part of our / of mine memory. - Kiefer’s quote from: ‘Tim Marlow joins…’, 2005
