Reducing cognitive load and lack of cultural capital by providing pre-loaded for and against arguments. Allows the student to concentrate on crafting the writing.
- 1 x Powerpoint with 60 topics with ‘for & against’ arguments.
- 1 x Powerpoint of each slide in black & white x3 for printing
- Word Doc - list of 60 topics
- Word Doc of ‘characters’ to write from their perspective
When I am teaching this skill set, I want my students to learn to write using rhetorical and figurative language devices; but they often stall at the first hurdle – struggling to think of what to write about.
I decided to take that cognitive load from them, partly because I also realised that some just don’t have the cultural capital to know what the for and against arguments might be for a given topic.
By giving the students the ‘answers’ in advance, I am freeing them up to take each idea and now concentrate on how to present that idea, which devices to use, and how to make it their own.
