The Context activity could be set as a homework task to research the Irish War of Independence and the Korean War, or students could take photos of slide or it could be printed off for those who don’t have a phone, or Students can make bullet point notes.
Quick fire competition with students putting the events in the right order. Extension: can they add other details to the story?
The Content Activity: What impression of the father do you get in the description of his honeymoon? How does McGahern present the character of the narrator? What do you think the main theme(s) of the story are?
Also included are two extra revision lessons of how to comment upon structure and form within short stories. The two extra lessons cover the following:
