This lesson teaches students the ‘text-hugging’ strategy whereby students take a section from the exam extract and re-write it in their own words but keeping the grammar, punctuation and syntax the same.
This technique is especially effective for lower ability students who lose valuable VSPAG marks and middle-ability students whose syntax hinders the fluency of their creative writing.
The lesson models ‘text-hugging’ for the students and then provides them with opportunities to practise the strategy in groups/pairs/independently.
