Physical Education is much more than practical skills, therefore if we assess in physical education we should consider three main areas; practical skills, cognitive skills and social and emotional skills. This is a generic assessment that covers a child’s development in all areas of KS1 and KS2 physical education. I suggest you assess at the end of each topic area or 2- 3 times a year.

How do I use this?

The yearly targets are based on the new national curriculum, this is a simple document, the teacher should assess 3 times per year. Each target has three columns, one for each term. The teacher simply puts a; . for developing, / for emerging and a X for sustaining.

This assessment allows the teacher to follow the progress of the students throughout the year and use the results to plan high quality physical education.
