Visually stunning, sumptuous BBC film investigating sensory adaptations in birds and mammals. Barn owl and kestrel hunting through snow; adaptations for hearing in owls – facial disk, asymmetrical ears, frequency-range sensitivity. Domestic dog detects owner’s cancer – expressed in dog’s moods; dogs trained to detect cancer, severe allergic reactions, epileptic fits and narcolepsy. Elephants and ultrasound – thunder; an experiment demonstrates the effect of ultrasound on a herd. A wolverine smells frozen meat under snow; overview of mammalian olfactory system; sensitivity in wolverines. Flight – pigeon vs peregrine vs barn owl, noise and turbulence produced by flight.
