Everyone has defences. Defences are the way that we protect ourselves emotionally from perceived or actual threat. In essence, when we develop and demonstrate defences we are wearing our emotional armour to shield yourself from being wounded or undermined.
Children also have defences and the challenge for others is to be able to identify these defences and how do we breakdown these defences. The following two page document highlights:
- How do we recognise defences
- The cycle of defensiveness
- Key tips about breaking down defences
- Examples and categories of defensive behaviour
- Why people demonstrate defences (function of behaviour)
