It is becoming ever clearer that people's VALUES strongly influence their priorities, thinking, decision-making and actions. Exploring the so-called fundamental British values is a stepping stone to learners understanding how they themselves, others and society 'ticks'. The more we are aware of the effects of chosen values, the easier it becomes to live our daily lives consistently in accordance with standards and principles that are meaningful to us individually and collectively. For example, is wellbeing a value being lived out with positive support in your family / school / place of work / as a nation? Is integrity considered important and therefore made a priority in your family / school / place of work / as a nation?

It's my pleasure Swaria. Many teachers are grappling with heavy workloads already and feel that teaching about the fundamental British values is an extra burden but actually the process helps to show that whatever a young person's academic abilities, it is essential that the curriculum embraces values literacy and character development so that learners understand how values drive people's thinking, choices and actions and that strength of character is needed to have the internal resources that allow a person to flourish. <br />
You might be interested to see the White Paper produced this July after stakeholders in children's education met together. It is called 'The Opportunities and Challenges offered by Character Education' (https://www.damekellyholmestrust.org/whitepaper) and a proposed definition of Character Development is: when people align their actions with their considered values. This shows how important it is to have a foundation of well considered values as a bedrock. Without this base, we drift and can't be true to ourselves.

Thank you for taking time to rate this. The understanding of just how values influence our decision-making will become all the more important as secondary schools get ready to meet their new obligations associated with their duty to provide comprehensive careers guidance for Years 8 to 13. http://bit.ly/2FTgkgw
