Begin the lesson by asking pupils to think of five reasons for why Bristol is an important city in the UK and internationally (expect pupils to make reference to transport links, employment opportunities along with social and cultural benefits). Recap the main reasons (slide 1).

Discuss with pupils the reasons for why Bristol is considered an influential city in the South West of England. Explore what Bristol has to offer in terms of culture, recreation and entertainment (slides 4-10).

Pupils complete the card sort by rearranging the social opportunities under the correct heading (cultural, sport and shopping). An extension task is available for pupils who complete the card sort (answer questions 1-4, pages 168-169). Recap answers to the questions and the card sort (slides 12-13).

Explain to pupils the GCSE question set for homework is linked to the work completed in today’s lesson. Therefore, reference must be made to information in the card sort in their answers, model an example (slide 14).

As a plenary, show the video clip of ‘Visit Bristol.’ Pupils are to write down as many examples of social opportunities as possible shown in the short video clip, pupils feeedback.
