This is a powerpoint lesson leading your class to investigate centred square numbers (a branch of recreational maths).
It begins by recapping what a square number is, then introduces the term “centred square number” and involves discussion about what pupils think it might be and why. Pupils are then shown how to discover which numbers are centred squares. Finally, the lesson provides 3 options for investigation based on how confident pupils feel.
The lesson lends itself well to group work and encourages logical discussion, problem-solving and independence. Ideal for a “Maths Day” activity, or a one- off lesson to develop the above skills.
