Summary of passage
Charles Dickens, a famous writer from England, was born in 1812 in Portsmouth. Despite a challenging childhood in a poor neighborhood in London, he found inspiration for his writing. At 12 years old, his father’s imprisonment led him to work in a factory, enabling him to understand the struggles of the poor. As he grew older, Dickens became renowned for his books, including “Oliver Twist,” “A Christmas Carol,” and “Great Expectations,” which shed light on the hardships faced by the poor in England. His character Ebenezer Scrooge, from “A Christmas Carol,” taught the importance of kindness and generosity. Dickens used his fame to advocate for the poor and improve working conditions. Although he passed away in 1870, his books continue to be cherished, teaching valuable lessons about empathy and standing up for what is right.
