Complete Unit of Work (roughly 6-8 lessons) covering:
Timbre and instrument families with keyboard performance opportunities to give an overview of the Baroque and Classical style. A highlight is a captioned video of the Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, which I have labelled with the instruments as they are playing, along with space in the workbooks for students to make notes on what they see and hear.
A look at conducting in 4/4 and then the layout of a typical Symphony orchestra. Optional activity on making a reed from a straw!
Final assessment is children researching an instrument and presenting on it (example presentation provided). This works best if you ensure that no groups are doing the same instrument.
Keywords covered: Classical, Baroque, Western, timbre, instrument families, ground bass, harpsichord, conductor, orchestra
