Elizabeth Laird's book, set in Ethiopia, is well-written and should appeal to competent readers throughout upper KS2 and KS3. It has some similarities to Beverley Naidoo's "Journey to Jo'burg", but it's a bit less intense. Excellent for conveying the point that African countries are not just a mass of undifferentiated poverty and helplessness.

Good questions but it's definitely not for UKS2 or even KS3! It's much more for Y3/4 as it's aimed at age 7-9. See Amazon, Lovereading4kids - all say 7+. I did also check with her as I know her, and she said the same.
Thank you so much.
