  • All worksheets needed to complete all lessons
  • A model GDS write of Alma
  • Checklists and keys for writing and editing lessons
  • Scaffolding materials e.g. writing scaffo and wordbanks
  • EAL friendly with lots of clip art and images. PowerPoint slides aren’t text heavy
  • Extension activities for more able pupils

  • All activities to be completed independently are modelled as a class first.

PowerPoint overview:

  1. Semi colons lesson with corresponding worksheet and answers included
  2. Predictions with corresponding predictions table, discussion-based focus and soundtrack analysis
  3. Recapping language features with opportunities for recalling prior learning, examples, definitions and opportunities for children to write their own
  4. Analysis of GDS model write, using a key to identify language features (included as a printable). Gives children the opportunity to recall prior knowledge and implement learning from previous lessons, as well as giving them an example of GDS writing to magpie from for their Big Write at the end of the unit.
  5. Improving (up-levelling) a piece of writing. Includes a model piece of writing to edit as a class together (resource is on PowerPoint slide to edit on interactive whiteboard and printable resource include for books). Resource for independent, partner or group editing included as a resource.
  6. Analysis of authorial intent and choice. Children learn about symbolism and how the film makers have made specific choices to create an atmospheric film. Children create a word bank of atmospheric words to be used.
  7. Planning a narrative opening - includes prompts for planning ideas ahead of narrative opening Big Write.
  8. Writing a narrative opening - reminders of what to include and which resources can be used, all of which are provided in this unit of planning.
  9. Editing lesson - reminders of what to edit and resources which can be used to edit e.g. checklists

Powerpoint slides include different icons to make it clear to teacher and class what is expected: thinking, discussion, new learning and independent work.
Notes are also used for some slides as a prompt to teachers or contain answers if teacher is unsure.
There are animations in the PowerPoint which may look strange when viewing as a document (e.g. overlapping text) but there are no issues in presentation mode.

Please note: This planning is for a narrative opening only but can be easily extended for the entire piece.

I have included scaffolding materials for the entire film should you want to do a longer Big Write.
