This resource is for a whole day project, and is designed to have two classes running alongside each other for 5 lessons, aimed at year 9 students (KS3). Alternatively could be used as a research SOW for 8 to 10 lessons. Its designed so that the lessons can be run with equipment/chemical/apparatus that is found in most schools.

Group 1 have the following lessons:

  1. Fingerprint profiling
  2. Sample analysis (Separation techniques: filtration and evaporation)/ Metal analysis (Flame test)/
  3. Non-metal analysis
  4. Shoeprint profiling/Fibre analysis
  5. Graphology (handwriting analysis)/Scientific collabortation/Evaluation

Group 2 have the following lessons:

  1. Ink analysis (chromatography)
  2. Shoeprint profiling/pH soil examination (pH indicator test)
  3. DNA extraction
  4. Blood splatter analysis
  5. Graphology (handwriting analysis)/Scientific collabortation/Evaluation.

It will take a bit of preparation and communication with the technician to prepare the evidence.

The plan has a complete explaination for when the materials are required, and how to organise samples to align with the evidence found on the ‘victim’, so the students evidence collected will match with the project booklet.

The project booklet is designed for the students to work on through the day.
