Make reading CVC words fun by using this easy-prep phonics scavenger hunt activity. Your Reception pupils will work individually, in pairs or small groups and use their decoding and blending skills to read and match words and pictures, write the matching letters, find the mystery numbers and crack the code.
This scavenger hunt focuses on the first letter in CVC words - this is the sound of a letter that most children find easiest to hear and discriminate so is the easiest to decode and read.
Most young children love a game where they are active and looking for things and this scavenger hunt will be a fun way to combine this and practicing key literacy skills.
Easy-Prep - Print and cut up the words and pictures and hide them around your room and/ or outdoors. Set the scene by reading the short passage and explaining what students have to do and hand out the answer sheets with a pencil and clipboard.
Players find the 10 different pictures (with numbers), read the words with letters, decide which is the correct spelling and match them to the pictures. They record the letters underneath the number (of the matching picture) on the answer sheet which will give them 3 words - the mystery code.
You will get:- 10 pictures
- 40 words - students choose the correct spelling - each picture has 4 spelling options.
- Answer sheet 1 - record the letters of the correct spellings to find the mystery words
- Answer sheet 2 - record the numbers for the given letters (a CVC word) to reveal the secret 3-digit code
