DECEPTION ISLAND ANTARCTICA - PART 2 -VOLCANIC FORMATION AND LEGACY

The volcanic formation of Deception Island is shown in a series of diagrams. The connection between the ring of volcanoes and the horseshoe shape of the island is shown in the detailed map. The research stations and settlements on the island are located. These stations were operating during the warmer summer months. In the higher mountains around the central caldera the slopes are covered by layers of ice and snow. This situation is the background for the third unit on Deception Island - the volcanic eruptions of 1967 and 1969. During these years the chinstrap penguins of Deception Island survived.
