A lesson focused on understanding what democracy is and how it grew in Ancient Athens. The lesson offers an immersive learning opportunity in which children take part in their own ‘census’ and then their own ‘vote’, however with the strict rules of the Ancient Greeks i.e. only those who were boys, lived in the local area all their lives, born in a certain city - contexts can be changed according to where you are teaching. The lesson then makes comparisons to what Democracy was actually like in Ancient Athens and there is an opportunity for children to take on the role of the assembly, the courts and the council.
