‘The Colours of Me’ is a simple song to teach young children about their similarities and differences. It’s a great DEI, PSHE and circle song to share in the classroom, music session or assembly too! It helps children to understand and respect the fact that while we’re all different, there are many ways in which we’re the same too!

This resource, uploaded in February 2024 features:

  1. Two lyrics sheets (to demonstrate different ways in which you can sing the song),
  2. An mp3 sing-along vocal track,
  3. An mp3 instrumental-only track, (for when you feel confident to sing your own versions of the song)
  4. An mp4 spoken lyrics video guide
  5. An mp4 sheet music video guide
  6. An mp4 with backing track and visual story slides
  7. A pdf learning overview guide
  8. A pdf bundle of resources to support you as the adult to help you to deliver the song
  9. A pdf of the sheet music
  10. A pdf set of song cards to index the song
  11. A pdf bundle of children’s enrichment activities linked to this song
  12. Black and white printables

The song is suitable for 3-7-year-olds, but could also be used for older primary aged children, who might like to have the opportunity to sing solos through the verses. This song is a great conversation starter - talk about the ways in which we are different and the ways in which we are the same - great for a circle-time or assembly topic.

How we use this resource: Start by reading through the lyrics and learning the song yourself, so that you feel confident in sharing it with the children ( - don’t worry about the quality of your own singing voice - all they need to join in, is to see your enthusiasm for singing with them!), then share it with the children. It’s always best to start unaccompanied - share the lyrics together and use your own vocal intonation to guide the children’s singing so that they have a sense of the melody. Then add the vocal audio track and away you go!
