Earth Day Cutie!
Create this Earth Cutie while teaching environmental education for Earth Day. Decorate your classroom as you teach your kiddos about the beauty and wonder of our Earth. Whether hanging from the ceiling or sitting on the shelf, your students will love creating and putting on their own personal touches on this unique Earth Day Globes.
Paper lanterns are great for developing fine motor skills such as: folding, coloring, painting, gluing, cutting, listening and following directions. Embedded within this Earth Day project there are several activities to extend your students learning about the Earth.
These units are designed in a Mix and Match format. You are able to pick the pieces that you want, depending on the needs and the abilities of your students…so many possibilities.
There are many ways to create these World lanterns using glitter, paper layering, leaves, shredded paper, tissue paper or garbage collected from around the playground. Let your creative juices flow.
This unit can be approached in several ways. Either as a quick Earth Day project that will take about 120 minutes to complete. Or as long, in-depth project that will take upwards of a week to complete. In my classroom, creating the basic lantern will take my kiddos about 90 minutes (coloring and assembly). Adding the face and body parts will take another 30 minutes. In my classroom I have my kiddos record Earth stories read or write sentences about the Earth on each Hair Strand. I use this Earth Day project as the center piece for my Environmental Education for Earth Day.
