Learning about Earth’s core and interior layers is important for middle and high school science because it helps students understand the structure of our planet and connects directly to plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, magnetic fields and the movement of heat inside Earth. Teaching this topic through a science reading passage with questions is a strong way to build scientific literacy, comprehension and critical thinking while helping students explore the crust, mantle, outer core and inner core in a clear and accessible format.

Students can investigate how scientists use seismic waves as evidence, why Earth’s layers have different properties, and how processes deep underground affect the surface we live on. The included HTML format adds flexibility and accessibility for classroom or independent use, while JSON export and import features make student responses easier to manage, creating an engaging and practical resource for middle and high school Earth science.

For many educational standards, a base level of content knowledge is needed around the relevant topics, this Earth’s core article covers that foundational knowledge for the standards: HS-ESS2-3

Earth's Core | Science Article + Research Project Template | Digital Print HTML

Make learning about Earth’s core and interior accessible, differentiated, and genuinely meaningful with a paired set of resources that helps students move from reading comprehension to deeper Earth science inquiry and independent research. The dual reading passage set supports mixed ability classes with two versions on the same topic, one with approximately 15 paragraphs and 6 questions, including three comprehension questions plus a fill in the gaps task, a true or false item, and a critical thinking prompt, and a second, more streamlined passage with approximately 10 paragraphs and 5 questions, including two comprehension questions plus fill in the gaps, true or false, and a critical thinking prompt. Students can then extend their understanding through a research project template that guides a one paragraph summary, a mathematics connection using data such as depth, temperature, pressure, density, scale, or seismic wave patterns, and an engineering or technological connection linked to seismology, drilling technology, sensors, geophysical models, and the tools scientists use to investigate the hidden layers of Earth. The template also includes a five term glossary, three core challenging inquiry questions with two optional sets of three extra questions for easy differentiation across age and ability, and a creative item space that builds ownership while keeping the work focused on accurate science. A clear 20 point rubric supports self, peer, or teacher assessment, while additional implementation guidance makes classroom use simple and flexible. The new 10 page HTML resource adds even more value with strong primer material on Earth’s core and interior plus JSON export and upload of answers, making this a practical and modern option for middle and high school science lessons on geology, plate tectonics, natural hazards, Earth systems, and STEM learning.
