This is an extract based activity on a popular nineteenth century novel. Students will be able to bring lots of contextual knowledge to discussions about this text. There are lots of activities, including assessing prior knowledge of the text, establishing facts about the time the text was written and thinking about the effects of a shipwreck in the nineteenth century. This extract gives students a simplified and broken down way of accessing the text. The first part poses comprehension and language activities to ensure the text is carefully read. This lesson can easily be edited for the AQA or Edexcel exam specification.
This lesson is suitable for KS3 students, but it can easily be adapted to suit KS4 students, particularly those who are less able.
