This lesson allows KS3 students to consider the themes, language and structure of a non-fiction text considering an extract which looks at the working lives of refuse collectors. The extract is approached on a step by step basis, making the resource suitable for KS3 students beginning GCSE style studies or weaker KS4 students who find non-fiction texts challenging. The subject matter is interesting and thought provoking and allows students to apply prior knowledge and context to the text. The resource can easily be adapted to suit the criteria of any GCSE exam board.

Activities include comprehension and language activities to ensure the text is carefully read. This is a useful text which gives information about the working life of binmen (refuse collectors) and give students an insight into the problems househould waste brings.

There are writing activities to include vocabulary building, as well as the usual exam style writing activity, with 2 writing options.

As the text is based around the working lives of refuse collectors, it could also be used as a PSHE text
