This lesson will teach students about the impacts the Transatlantic Slave Trade had on the West Coast of Africa. This includes two sections. The first involves the appearance of more slave castles with a focus on Elmina castle and its role in the slave trade. The second is considering how Europeans changed the relations between African societies in West Africa. By the end, students will have understood how Europeans encouraged war / violence between African kingdoms to get more slaves for their empires whilst recognising the brutal nature of slave castles and the people who managed them.
This is a fully resourced lesson which includes a printable information sheet containing the primary sources as well as a worksheet to help students engage with the lesson tasks.
