I created a 7 lesson booster for my Year 5/6 children to support work on expanded noun phrases as this was an area they were finding rather tricky. There are 7 lessons, which lasted me for 30 minutes a time. The lessons take the following form:
Lesson 1: Identifying nouns in a Harry Potter extract.
Lesson 2: categorising nouns. Are they abstract, collective, proper or common?
Lesson 3: using adjectives to expand nouns.
Lesson 4: using prepositional phrases to expand nouns.
Lesson 5: using relative clauses to expand nouns.
Lesson 6: writing expanded noun phrases [condensing knowledge]
Lesson 7: spotting expanded noun phrases in sentences.
The lessons are fun and interactive. My children absolutely loved it and now they are independently using them in writing. I have also included a ‘burger’ strategy to help children use expanded noun phrases in their writing. This is displayed in my classroom and the children use it religiously!
