I made this complete unit of work for a Year 4 class based on the book Run Wild by Gill Lewis. The end aim was for the children to write their own adventure story based on an animal encounter. It includes SPaG retrieval slides for every lesson and a ‘My turn, Our turn, Your turn’ approach to modelling. Each SPaG lesson incorporated has one lesson that is heavily scaffolded and another lesson that allows the children to apply the skills taught.

Lesson objectives included:
I can identify the features of an adventure story.
I can draw an industrial setting based on descriptions from the text.
I can identify and use past tense verbs. Double lesson - Try it then Use it.
I can use expanded noun phrases. Double lesson - Try it then Use it.
I can write a setting description (short burst).
I can use adverbs to show time and possibility. Double lesson - Try it then Use it.
I can write a diary entry - short burst.
I can use coordinating conjunctions ‘for’, ‘nor’ and ‘yet’. P23-30 Double lesson - Try it then Use it.
I can write a non-chronological report – short burst.
I can plan an adventure story.
I can write an adventure story – prove it.
I can review and edit my work.
