This is an activity looking at the chemistry behind fingerprint visualization. Using commercial fingerprint powders and superglue. The superglue reaction is presented as a polymerisation reaction in terms of initiation propagation and termination. basically polymer chemistry under the disguise of CSI. This superglue reaction could form the basis of an interesting extended project at A'level.

I have updated the procedure to remove the need for a hotplate stirrer for the superglue visualization. This uses a plastic petri dish with a piece of filter paper placed inside. The exothermic reaction between paper and superglue is sufficient to generate an atmosphere of superglue vapour to react with the latent print residue.<br />
