This is a 60+ page no-prep bundle, designed to teach students about the lives and achievements of a range of significant First Nations Australians, as well as provide independent reading and writing tasks, perfectly integrated into reading group time.
The resource consists of ten full-colour reading cards (presented as a PDF slideshow), which details the major life events and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. This shows their achievements in the wider community, as well as their advocacy for Indigenous Rights.
There are two different slideshows - one targeting the reading level of a generalised group of Stage Two students, and the other targeting a Stage Three level. In this way, differentiated levels within a class cohort can also be achieved through accessing more or less complex vocabulary, grammatical content and sentence structure.
I use these resources as an independent reading task in my classroom - one per week, as a rotational task. In this way, it provides ten weeks of learning. Students read the card as part of reciprocal reading and then independently complete the biography template.
Also included is a set of 15 biography templates. These are blank and can be used for any future biographical writing you might complete in your classroom!
These resources are designed to be cross-curricular and also access the Stage Three History strand “Australia as a Nation” which looks at the journey fo Indigenous rights and struggles over time.
Historical figures include:
- Pemulwuy
- Bennelong
- David Unaipon
- Albert Namatjira
- Neville Bonner
- Evonne Goolagong Cawley
- Archie Roach
- Cathy Freeman
- Adam Goodes
- Jessica Mauboy
I have many other resources in my store, most of them targeting Australian literacy skills, so feel free to check them out.
Happy reading!
