First Reading Booklets Unit 1 – designed as an inexpensive resource to be used as a follow-up to the corresponding ‘First Reading’ powerpoint files. They can be used in school or for homework – print as many as you need. They are intended to supplement phonics based reading books, not replace them, so you may want to ensure that children have been taken through the corresponding powerpoints and have practised the cloze procedure before sending the booklets home for further practice.
These are similar in level to the Pink Reading Band. They contain 8 pages which can be printed onto 2 sheets of A4 paper, folded and stapled to make individual reading booklets. They encourage children to use strategies to support segmenting and blending. The last page of each booklet shows relevant sight words, including words from previous titles.
Unit 1 uses a repetitive sentence structure to support prediction, with a mixture of decodeable and sight words. The powerpoints encourage children to cross check two sources of information – the context (illustration) and the letters on the page. In Unit 1, children are encouraged to look at the initial sound to help to predict the verbs.
