FIRST READING Unit 2e (similar to Red Band reading level) – to supplement (not replace) the teaching of phonics.
Children will need to be able to recognise most of single letter sounds to access this resource.
The Powerpoint slides aim to develop early reading skills using the cloze procedure - using the context (illustration) to predict unknown words and to cross check two sources of information (the meaning and the available letters – in this case, the initial sound). This encourages children to use other strategies when their phonic knowledge is insufficient for segmenting and blending an unknown word.
Further skills practised: segmenting and blending; sight words (decodeable and ‘tricky’); fluency.
