This First World War themed literacy lesson includes a learning objective and differentiated success criteria, and is differentiated three ways.

It begins by introducing the concept of letter writing in the trenches and touches on censorship before children look at a real letter from the trenches (I have taken an original with a picture of the soldier for the HAPs and then made it more simple for the MAPs and more simple again for the LAPs).
The lesson includes a model write with suggestions for ‘thinking aloud’ as you write it and for which bits the class can help with by showing ideas on their whiteboards.
Children then write their own letter (LAPs have a writing frame - included), before joining in with a reflective plenary at the end.

I have not been observed teaching this particular lesson but I have received an outstanding grade for all recent observations from both my head teacher and more senior outside observers.
