This is a lesson plan and supporting resources to accompany the Maths adventure picture book ‘Fractions in Disguise’ by Edward Einhorn. The lesson can work for Years 3 or 4, and is based around the learning objective of equivalent fractions.

At the end of the lesson plan I have included the national curriculum links for both year groups. All answers to problems on the powerpoint and the children’s worksheet are provided, as are printable resources for the ‘fraction art’.

It is a lovely book to own, but there are plenty of readings on youtube of the book if you are trying to save costs.

I taught this with a Year 4 class that I hadn't had before, and they LOVED it - especially coming up to the front to use the 'reducer' machine. Some of the children have been coming to me at break times asking me if I can take them for a 'reducer lesson' again. Another really successful story book lesson with a good level of challenge for where the children are working at with fractions. Thank you.
