lots of ideas to get the pupils thinking more deeply. It could be useful to remind them that Hinduism is a vast religion with a lot of variation in different regions and some Hindus might interpret the features of Ganesha in different ways. </p> For example I have heard that when the events were unfolding at the battle of Kurukshetra in the Mahabarata, someone with exceptional vision was needed to record the conversation between Sri Krishna and Arjuna, as the battle was about to start. Ganesha came to the scene to make this record, and not having any pen to hand broke one of his tusks off so he could use it as a pen. This not only offers an interesting explanation for his having a broken tusk but also links him with The Bhagavad Gita which is one of Hinduism's best loved and most important scriptures, with Sri Krishna, who is one of Hinduism's best loved and most important Avatars or sources of spiritual authority and wisdom - and also shows the importance of personal sacrifice in the spiritual life.
