This contains a thorough revision table of themes in ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ including horror, secrecy, science, friendship and setting. It is clearly set out so that there are three moments where that theme is revealed and then a column referring to Stevenson’s message about the the theme.

There is an example of a filled-in theme table, a power-point presentation that takes students through each moment within each theme (to allow for discussion and questioning). This is then followed by a GCSE English Literature extract-based question: How does Stevenson present a terrifying setting in this extract and the rest of the novel? (The extract is taken from chapter 2).
Students could plan an answer as pairs or independently and, if needed, support could be gained from the theme sheet on horror and/or setting. Then there is an example, full GCSE response to the extract to model how to refer to the extract and the whole novel.

The resources give students thorough revision notes on themes and then demonstrate how to apply these notes to a GCSE extract question on ‘Jekyll and Hyde’.
