The lesson also considers whether Bismarck was in control of events as part of the wider historical debate on whether he master planned German unification.

Activities include

  • Starter activity in which pupils analyse a cartoon depicting the Luxemburg crisis.
  • Reading and comprehension exercise in which pupils identify reasons for French hostility towards Prussia after the Seven Weeks War between Austria and Prussia.
  • Pupils evaluate alternative interpretations of Bismarck’s behaviour during the crisis.
