Guess the Time Game

A little game that is great for getting an absolute silent class! I use this with maths classes, but could easily be used with a form or other subjects entirely.
The aim of the game is to guess how much time has passed in a piece of time. Very simple, but you’ll get some wildly different guesses.
Some students are amazing at this and come up with fantastic techniques or strategies too.

A round of the game:

1. Students place their heads on the desk
2. After a while, you say “START” while simultaneously starting a stopwatch
3. The students begin counting (keep an eye on watches…)
4. After a while of your choosing, you say “STOP” while simultaneously stopping a stopwatch
5. Note down all students guesses
6. See how close they are

You could do this a few times through.

Spreadsheet

I have created a spreadsheet to assist with this game (which even includes a stopwatch as part of it) along with an example sheet. It will work out all the differences for you and who has done best. All you have to add initially is the names of your students.

Applications

I have used the data gathered from this in maths lessons - as it gives you some real data to use. For example, to create a grouped frequency table of their times. Alternatively, you could use it to plot a graph of the data.
