The destruction caused by the 1973 eruption is shown by a map sequence. Human intervention stopped the sealing of the entrance to the harbour. The people returned to Heimaey with the resolution to restore a viable economy. New houses were constructed to replace those buried by the lava advance or destroyed by fire. Tourism is promoted as a significant income. Local tourist operators run regular tours around the island or out to nearby world famous bird breeding islands. The study of Heimaey could also be used in senior secondary studies.

Fab resource - the images are so useful to use with my Year 6 class who are looking at the impact of volcanoes on communities.
