This is a resource designed to support A Level History students in their wider academic reading. It would be especially useful for students undertaking History coursework where they need to show evidence of having independently researched and evaluated the views of different historians. It is also a useful way for students to organise wider reading undertaken for their examined units which will help them to broaden their understanding of the key issues.
The log guides them through:

  • noting down the key details of the provenance - assisting in later formation of footnotes and bibliography
  • evaluation of the provenance
  • summary of the main argument and identification of evidence used to support this
  • evaluation of the content through reference to their own knowledge
  • extending their engagement with the text through a more personal response
  • forming a conclusion on the overall value of the text
The log forms a good homework task and a tool for teachers to check that students are engaging with suitable academic resources.
