A look at 9 popular household appliances and wattage required to run (on average).
Students must estimate daily usage and hence find yearly cost per appliance, for a one-person household. The task requires students to convert minutes to hours, estimate average daily usage for appliances that are not used everyday, make reasonable assumptions about an 'average one person' household and convert between watts and kilowatts. Students are asked to make predictions for each appliance to start and can compare their predictions to their final outcomes.
Student worksheet attached with extension problems for anyone who finishes early. There is an estimate included created by myself. Whichever team gets closets to this estimate, wins.
Suggested groups of 4 and 1-2 hours.
