How to teach the writing of a poem about an old photograph
- Provide your students with examples of old photographs.
- Discuss them. What hasn’t changed? What has? What interesting details have you seen?
- Read them the example poem ‘1908’ by Johnnie Young.
- Ask them to write their own poem about their own chosen old photograph.
- Suggest a structure to follow based on the example poem:
Stanzas
1 An introduction – showing the reader how the photo was found
2 Point out a few details that have not changed over all those years
3 A short stanza that poses a question: ‘so what has changed over the years?’
4 Examples of things that have changed over the years.
5 A focus on the people and a set of reflections and questions about them.
6 Thoughts about people in the far future looking at pictures of us.
