This is a unit of work I created to complement an integrated Stage Three History unit of work on “Australia as a Nation”. This unit of work contains a component whereby students are required to explore the stories of people who migrated to Australia, including at least one Asian nation.

I incorporated the text The Little Refugee to enable my students to understand and synthesise what they were learning in their History unit – about the dangers faced by refugees in coming to Australia, and the positive impact of diversity on the community.

The book The Little Refugee by Anh and Suzanne Do tells the true story of Anh Do’s journey to Australia as a small boy, and his early years in his new country. It can be slightly confronting for students to see the difficulties and hardships faced by refuges in coming to Australia, so a background is provided in this slideshow.

This unit contains:

  • outcomes (History/HASS/English)

  • a printable, no-prep student workbook with sections for comprehension, grammar, text-to-self connections, vocabulary, research and more

  • a detailed background to the contact of the story - the Vietnam War, the Fall of Saigon, “boat people” and Vietnamese migration to Australia; and the influence of Vietnamese culture in Australia

  • a step-by-step shared reading guide to the text, including discussion prompts. Prompts focus on literal and inferential comprehension as well as drawing upon visual literacy skills (with learning intentions)

  • “before the book” and “after the book” tune-in questions

  • after the book reflection question

  • in-depth author study focussing on Anh Do as a comedian, writer and artist

  • Literacy Centre task cards with two weeks of integrated English/Creative Arts independent activities

The resource is provided in both PowerPoint and PDF formats.
