A quick exercise to clarify the content of Rudyard Kipling’s poem If from the Edexcel IGCSE English Literature Poetry Anthology.

In Task 1, pupils fill boxes with Kipling’s 17 pieces of advice to a young boy, in their own words.

This could be followed by discussion of how advice might differ today for any young person. In Task 2, pupils think of serious or comic advice about exams, finding a job, leaving home, learning to be independent etc and craft these into a 21st century version of the poem.
