Introduction to IGCSE Chemistry and the first lesson in the topic 'States of Matter'. Dealing with changes of state between solids, liquids and gases and demonstrating diffusion with a choice of experiments depending on the level of student understanding and equipment available to you.
Objectives:
Can you describe the interconversions of solids, liquids & gases? (C)
Can you explain the idea of diffusion with a practical example? (B)
Can you apply the idea of diffusion to fully explain an example within both liquids & gases? (A/A*)
Students expected to formulate their own ideas about diffusion and draw on knowledge from KS3.
waste of money! no way this lesson would last an hour

This would be the first lesson of the year, for IGCSE Chemistry, it would last at least an hour if you use the, differentiated powerpoint.

1. Handing out books and filling in details on front, explaining progress log, (not provided) other admin required for the start of the year. (10min)
2. Going though lab safety, use rules for your school or any set that can be easily found on line. (5min)
3. A worksheet to get students to think about solids liquids and gases. Check to make sure they have completed this, properly, students share answers with each other and the rest of the class. (10min)
4. Task to get students to think about diffusion, provide them with definition of diffusion and check their understanding on this. Ask them to give you examples. (5min)
5. Demo 1. on diffusion and dilution (can be completed as class practical) (5-15 min)
6. Classic experiment- cHCl and cNH3 diffusion tube, see ring of ammonium chloride. For more advanced groups talk about why the ring is not in the centre of the tube. (5-10min)
7. Students write up/explain these two demos. (10 min)
8. Ask students to explain lesson objectives/ write a sentence for each on to prove they have understood. (5min)

Hope that helps.
