A lesson that focuses on the poem ‘Sonnet 116’ by William Shakespeare, and aims to develop personal interpretation, annotation confidence and close analysis skills.

The slides include:

  • Mark scheme information and a breakdown of AOs.
  • Guiding questions on language, form and structural features to support annotations for each quatrain and couplet
  • Group analysis tasks
  • Authorial context
  • A thematic grid that connects the poem to wider, holistic ideas and supports with comparison for AO3.
  • Revision questions at the end of the presentation for exam prep

Suitable for use as a standalone lesson or to support an existing SoL as part of the Edexcel IGCSE Literature Poetry Anthology.

Originally taught to a Year 10, class but this lesson could also be adapted for Year 11 revision.
