This is a detailed 23 page powerpoint which introduces the perfect tense / passé composé in a step-by-step way - showing the difference between avoir and être verbs.
It uses verbs and phrases connected with the topic of holidays.
Slides include revision of the parts of avoir / être, a list of verbs in the passé composé which the students have to divide into the two groups, a game where they have to guess the ‘backwards’ verbs as they appear letter-by-letter backwards, and an unjumbling exercise where the students have to put the words in the right order, and then identify the verbs and whether they take avoir / être. Finally they have to practise manipulating the verbs with different subject pronouns.
I have always used this successfully with medium-high ability Year 8s, but it would also work well for weaker KS4 students. It always takes me about 90 minutes with classes; certainly at least an hour if the class is really focused.
