" James Monroe (1758-1831) was the 5th President of the United States, serving from 1817 to 1825. He is best known for the Monroe Doctrine, which declared opposition to European colonization in the Americas, and for presiding over the “Era of Good Feelings,” a period marked by national unity and the absence of major partisan conflicts. Monroe was a Revolutionary War veteran, a key diplomat in the Louisiana Purchase negotiations, and twice served as the Governor of Virginia. His presidency also saw the Missouri Compromise, which temporarily eased tensions over slavery. Monroe died on July 4, 1831, becoming the third president to die on Independence Day. "
