This is an old Russian method for long multiplication that uses multiplication and division of numbers by 2.
It takes longer to work out but provides and excellent finish to the long multiplication unit of work and is also a great link to introduce division as your next unit.
Get your students to work out different sums and check with standard method and / or a calculator. Now see if they can explain why this method works…
